The Tuareg are a group of mostly nomadic people who live in northern
Africa. They divide themselves into five strictly defined social classes. The
Tuareg, who once controlled the caravan trade routes across the Sahara, are a
semi-nomadic, pastoralist people of North African Berber origin. They are
nominally Muslim and presently number from 1 to 1.5 million. They are grouped
into independent federations and live in southern Algeria, southwest Libya,
Mali, and Niger, and in smaller groups, in Burkina Faso and Nigeria.
